Crystal ball gazing isn’t the best way to develop a long term strategic plan; but looking to the future to identify new trends is vital if companies want to stand out in what has become a highly competitive and commoditized industry.

An increasingly powerful consumer culture driven by social media and web 2.0; recent scandals involving financial institutions; and a global meltdown have moved the customer to the forefront. And made them less loyal - customers can switch accounts and products with ease. Acquiring, retaining and, most importantly, satisfying customers is becoming harder.

The customer has evolved. What must financial services marketers do to evolve too?

We live in a customer centric culture where brand experience is often more important than price differentiation and a customer expects his or her demands will be met or they walk. In order to win  and keep customers, and more importantly to grow share of wallet, needs must be anticipated, demands met and wants created, to deliver a consistent brand experience.  For financial service marketers, flexibility , preparation and early adoption of new technology and communications tools are key.
